- W4221010584 abstract "Grouper’s populations have been reduced by more than 50% in the last decades, and 25% of the grouper species are now listed as threatened species on the IUCN red list. The fate of any population will depend directly on how new individuals, either by birth or immigration, can replenish individual losses to maintain population growth. Reproductive stock reduction can severely impact recruitment, and therefore jeopardize population persistence or replenishment. All groupers have a bipartite life cycle with a pelagic larvae and a benthic juvenile and adult phases. The survival of the larval phase and thus settlement intensity will therefore have great effect on the size and age structure of grouper populations. However, stochastic events may pose a non-predictable component in the population dynamic puzzle. The lack of data on the early life stages of groupers is therefore particularly worrisome to manage these species efficiently. This chapter describes the current knowledge on early life history of grouper species, then discuss how these characteristics influence the dynamics of these populations, and to what extent anthropogenic actions are affecting the species’ persistence." @default.
