- W4221013082 abstract "<p>We have assessed inter-annual melt rate variability at the base of the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf using in-situ phase sensitive radars and historic data from ocean moorings. We have identified several oceanographic features beneath the ice shelf. Near the western Ronne ice front we have inferred seasonal lateral shifts in an Ice Shelf Water outflow current. Deeper in the western Ronne part of the cavity we have found little inter-annual variability over the 13-year long record except for three different modes of seasonal cycle expression in basal melting, the causes of which would be consistent with year-to-year stratification and circulation changes, depending on the mode. Contrary to that, in the southeastern part of the Ronne cavity, along the main barotropic flow pathway, the shape of the seasonal melt rate cycle does not substantially change from year to year, with inter-annual melt rate variability superimposed on top of it. In addition to providing insight into the ocean circulation beneath the ice shelf, these data also serve as a valuable benchmark for melt rate estimates derived using satellite altimetry and we provide a comparison of these products.</p>" @default.
