- W4221097795 abstract "Amelia Gray was born in 1982, and belongs therefore to the first generation of writers who have had to build a career in spite of the Internet. In the postwar Program Era that preceded her, when MFA programs proliferated across the United States, talented young writers already had to vie with a crippling lack of distinction. Now, in a new age of instantaneous, borderless access to all the world's online magazines, they have to stand out not just from a globe of other qualified writers but a head above the unprecedentedly endless sea of new and newer feeds that compete for their public's attention. This is a brand new and nearly impossible time, and Gray's career speaks to some of its major trends and troubles. Formally, Gray's stories and novels alike have the short, grotesque, attention-grabbing sensibility of the predominant genre in the age of Twitter: the “flash” fiction. What elevates her work above a lot of flash's superficial shock value, however, is that it is consistently and meaningfully about the body. Though Gray is less overtly concerned with literary parricide than some of her contemporaries, her evolving aesthetics of embodiment is an important example of the effort at the turn of the twenty-first century (variously called metamodernism, post-postmodernism, trans-postmodernism, etc.) to marry postmodernism's electric globalism with family and locality, its ironic disaffection with emotional depth, and its ontological uncertainty with renewed grand narratives about the material body and brain." @default.
