- W4221127052 abstract "This chapter begins by explaining what hierarchies are and distinguishing “authoritative” relations from “authoritarian” ones. It shows that in several ways, traditional Confucian hierarchies were problematic, but argues that we should not abandon hierarchy altogether. The chapter then shows that there are three keys to a modern Confucian view of hierarchy. First, there are some areas where traditional views simply need to be criticized and changed. Second, in some cases we need to carve out space for new kinds of equal, non-hierarchical relations; chief among these are equality before the law and the political equality of citizens. Finally, for the remaining large number of potentially hierarchical relations, we need to clarify how a proper understanding of hierarchy (and the structures and values that support it) make it healthy." @default.
