- W4224251489 abstract "This chapter applies fundamental concepts of dynamics, nonlinearity, and chaotic behavior to notions of creativity, health, and illness. It describes how nonlinear dynamical systems (NDS) models apply to crucial issues and phenomena that are not well described with customary linear models. The difficulty begins with simply trying to stay healthy or to promote health and well-being in others, or to cope anew with a changing world, such as the vexing difficulties with meeting the COVID-19 pandemic. Such “wicked problems” are evident across psychological, physiological, and social systems, and they are perennially puzzling, even maddening. These difficult problems—known since the ancients as uniquely “resistant”—may be much more amenable to nonlinear dynamic methods. Even very simple models can provide accurate insights. This chapter utilizes an illustrative “toy” model, an entertaining and fascinating magnetic pendulum toy. The chapter shows how well-being emerges from multivariate nonlinear processes, a point of view that untangles the seemingly quixotic nature of living well and promoting a good society and a survivable future. When people accept that relationships among our variables (including health and creativity) are generally nonlinear ones—and when they remember things always change with time—theorizing and research become more true-to-life, although more complex. Approaches that are realistically grounded in NDS can address previously impossible problems, including promoting healthy, creative, and fulfilling lives, reforming the U.S. healthcare system, and perhaps even turning the tide in time on the existential crisis of global climate change." @default.
