- W4225282831 abstract "Objective: Weight suppression (WS) is associated with many eating disorder (ED) related outcomes. However, traditional calculations of WS do not consider the age or height at which one’s highest past weight was reached, even though individuals with EDs usually reach their highest past weight while still developing physically. Lowe et al. (2021) found that a developmentally-sensitive index of WS, developmental weight suppression (DWS), is associated with a wider variety of ED-related outcomes compared to traditional weight suppression (TWS). The current study aimed to replicate and extend findings from this study in a larger sample of individuals with bulimia nervosa at a residential ED treatment center. Method: We examined the relations between each WS measure and ED symptoms, as well as broader emotional symptoms (e.g., anxiety, depression). We also examined how each WS measure related to weight history variables. Results: TWS and DWS showed a similar number of relations with ED-related outcomes. However, DWS showed consistent, positive relations with behavioral outcomes (e.g., vomiting), and consistent, negative relations with cognitive/affective outcomes (e.g., weight and eating concerns). TWS was positively related to highest premorbid, highest postmorbid, and lowest postmorbid weights. DWS was also positively related to highest premorbid zBMI, but was negatively related to lowest and highest postmorbid zBMI and current zBMI.Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the nature of relations between DWS and ED-related symptoms may be both similar to, and fundamentally different from, TWS’ relation to key features of BN, depending on which characteristics are examined." @default.
