It considers the system of joint-stock banks in England and Wales in the period 1826–44, when these institutions were owned by local individuals. The chapter investigates whether banks in this environment were – as Milliband, Corbyn, McDonnell and Bushell suggest – embedded within local societies and commercial communities, and more willing to lend and thus support industrial growth. The passing of the Banking Co-partnership Act in 1826 removed the restriction on numbers of partners in banks and them to form with an unlimited number of owners. Thus joint-stock banks established from 1826 onwards, in competition with existing private banks that, with a maximum of six partners, had limited recourse to capital which often led to instability and failure." @default.
