- W4225726441 abstract "Most of the topography and drainage of the Mississippi River system has developed within relatively recent geologic time. In contrast to the relative geographic stability for location of the lower Mississippi River, the headwaters of the upper Mississippi River system appear to have experienced considerable modifications during the last 2.5–3.0 million years in response to regional advances and retreats by continental glaciers. Holocene backswamp environments have accumulated from 10 to 35 m of sediment deposited during overbank flooding. Thickness of the deposits increases downstream in the Lower Mississippi Valley. The longitudinal profile of the Mississippi River does not possess a smooth concave-upward morphology that is typical of most large alluvial rivers. During the Wisconsin Stage of glaciation the Mississippi River system drained nearly the entire southern margin of the continental (Laurentide) ice sheet." @default.
