- W4225771504 abstract "In the evolution of eukaryotic cells, mitochondria have for a long time played a prominent role. Nowadays, progress in understanding the structure and function of mitochondria highlighted their integration into a number of cell activities, for example, their dynamic behavior as subcellular organelles within a cell and during cell division being a major focus of attention. Besides energy production, mitochondria make an integral contribution to the regulation of several aspects of cell biology, such as molecular metabolism, redox status, calcium signaling, and programmed cell death (Schatz, 1995). Mitochondria represent one of the main targets of xenobiotic-induced bioenergetic failure (Wallace and Starkov, 2000; Palmeira and Rolo, 2004). It is therefore not surprising that mitochondrial dysfunction can cause cell death through ATP depletion and calcium dysregulation (Di Lisa and Bernardi, 1998). However, the picture is more complex owing to the role played in cell death by proteins released from mitochondria, such as cytochrome c (Liu et al., 1996) and apoptosis-inducing factor (Lorenzo et al., 1999). This chapter describes the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in reproductive and developmental toxicity." @default.
