However, on several occasions in India, tree plantation has been taken as a non-technical activity not requiring the presence of a botanist or an ecologist. Given the ecological benefits of native species and the potential of harm caused by exotics, such unplanned urban plantations can become counterproductive. In the absence of the science of Ecology and Biodiversity being made use of in the aforementioned activities, two major problems are emerging – the unwitting plantation of exotic species and exclusion of those native species the socio-economic benefits of which are not popular and which are excluded from commercial or even government nurseries. However, several Jungle flora species are not easily propagated and require protocols to be developed for their seed germination, vegetative propagation, or tissue culture. Given the immense floral biodiversity of India, this indicates the requirement of humongous research and funding – not only to develop jungle flora for plantation activities but also to fully understand the ecological linkages of each species. The gradual inclusion of jungle flora species in urban plant nurseries offers the advantages of involving horticulturists, gardeners, and even gardening enthusiasts in relevant data generation for jungle flora. It will also help create a demand for such species among the public, which will encourage further research. In this chapter, the results of secondary studies, as well as experimentation on germination and grafting of about 25 jungle flora species will be included." @default.
