- W4226125514 abstract "Restoring bridge capacities through timely condition-based maintenance allows for safe and rapid mobility in smart cities. This chapter develops a hazard-based maintenance management method for bridge decks based on routine inspection data. A compound state approach with three indicators—age, condition rating, and age at deterioration initiation—is used to describe the condition of the bridge deck. The proportional hazard model with a Weibull baseline hazard function (WPHM) combines the three indicators to a hazard value for decision-making. After each routine inspection, bridge managers calculate hazard through WPHM and choose to perform preventive repair, general repair, or no action. The objective is to determine the hazard thresholds that assist bridge managers in selecting the optimal repair scheme with minimal annual expected cost. The optimization process is formulated and solved using Markov decision processes. Unlike existing bridge management approaches, the proposed method incorporates the effect of time and provides dynamic decision thresholds, which is consistent with the appropriate point of view that cities are dynamic organisms." @default.
