- W4226270817 abstract "Given the barrage of natural enemies that lepidopterans face during their larval stage, the immune response should provide reliable, effective defense against pathogens, parasites, and parasitoids. In this chapter, we review the literature on host plant-mediated interactions that influence the strength of the immune response in caterpillars. First, we delve into the impacts of plant chemical traits on caterpillar immunity, focusing on nutritional composition and secondary chemical defenses, and specifically highlight studies that link immunological variation to natural enemy performance. This body of research indicates that the strength of immune responses is often positively impacted by protein consumption but that different immune parameters may be optimized by distinct macronutrient blends. Sequestration of plant secondary metabolites has in some cases been associated with reduced immunocompetence, though these relationships vary across focal caterpillar species and chemical compounds. Diet-mediated immune enhancement has frequently, but not exclusively, been linked to increased survival following experimental challenge with bacterial or viral pathogens, with outcomes likely depending upon the specific caterpillar-enemy pairing. Next, we outline specific areas of research where knowledge gaps still persist with regard to host plant-mediated effects on caterpillar immunity, focusing on (1) the impact of the microbiome on caterpillar immune responses, (2) the outcomes of immunological variation for the fitness of infected caterpillars, and (3) the relationship between herbivore diet breadth and the immune response. In this section, we suggest research avenues that can be pursued to fill these knowledge gaps and move the field of caterpillar ecoimmunology forward." @default.
