- W4226276871 abstract "Buildings include all the human-made physical spaces where people live, recreate, and work. These spaces provide shelter, protection, and comfort, but may affect human health by bringing pollutants into indoor environments. Because of their overlapping goals, these buildings should be built for quality of life and ease in future modification. This chapter begins with the closed-loop approach in the construction industry which is not well defined. It describes the earth’s biosphere and technosphere and how they are similar except in the disability of the technosphere to recycle and decompose materials generated by its metabolic activities. A combination of emerging trends to empower a change toward an intelligent and circular built environment has been outlined. A gradual movement of the building paradigm with a future vision of integrating people and systems dynamically and functionally has been discussed. The totality of intelligence, sustainability, and health is described, manifested by enclosing space and disclosing operation. Introduction to each major topic of the book is given including foundations of healthy buildings, energy efficiency, cyber-physical systems, automation and control, bioelectromagnetics, engineering controls for building hygiene, and the role of intelligence in the built environment. Further, international programs, standards, and rating systems that prioritize sustainability and health are outlined." @default.
