- W4226282808 abstract "Poly(hydroxyalkanoates) (PHAs), comprise a family of biodegradable, biocompatible and non-toxic biopolyesters possessing different structures, which are produced by various types of bacteria (Lenz and Marchessault [1] and Zinn et al. [2]). They are used not only as raw materials but also as blends with other biodegradable polymers, such as polylactide (PLA), for achieving superior mechanical properties, biodegradability and processability. PLA/PHA blends have been found to possess superior impact strength and biodegradation rate in comparison with neat PLA (Takagi et al. [3]). PHA has been found to serve not only as a plasticizer, but also as a lubricant for PLA in molten and solid states (Botta et al. [4]). This chapter provides an introduction to the fundamentals of the structure and chemistry of PHA, in addition to an overview of the preparation, characterization, properties and applications of PLA/PHA blends." @default.
