- W4226334328 abstract "Colombia has a rich biodiversity and is known to possess 29,769 plant species distributed in more than 400 families and 3000 genera, with the most abundant families being Orchidaceae, Fabaceae, Asteraceae, Rubiaceae, and Melastomataceae. The objective of this chapter is to review the literature on medicinal plants used as antimicrobials in Colombia. A search was made on research work carried out in the country or abroad, on the traditional use of plants that grow in Colombia (endemic or not), for the treatment of different diseases related to infections by bacteria, fungi, viruses, or microscopic parasites. In addition, scientific articles published on research work, from 1990 to 2020, related to the evaluation of biological activity (antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and antiparasitic), of extracts and fractions of plants collected in Colombia, were reviewed. The foregoing allowed establishing that the plants most traditionally used in Colombia for infections in general terms were Austroeupatorium inulifolium Kunth. (Asteraceae), Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf (Poaceae), Guazuma ulmifolia Lam. (Malvaceae), Jacaranda caucana Pittier, Solanum nudum Hassl (Solanaceae), Xanthium strumarium L. (Asteraceae), and Hymenaea courbaril L. (Leguminosae). Similarly, the review of the 43 final documents focusing on in vitro bioassays as antimicrobials resulted in the report of 95 plant species from Colombia. Of these, five showed promising antibacterial activity (MIC values ≤5 μg/mL), nine showed promising antiparasitic activity (ED50 ≤5 μg/mL), and three exhibited promising antiviral activity (MIC ≤5.5 μg/mL). Finally, this chapter summarizes some of the advances that our research group has been making on the bioguided fractionation of plant extracts from the Colombian Caribbean region to obtain antibacterial molecules against bacteria resistant to carbapenems and methicillin." @default.
