- W4226335767 abstract "The appearance of biblical analogies during the reigns of the reforming Tudor monarchs is well established in the scholarship. The appearance of this device during the reign of Mary I, however, has not received the same focus. This chapter re-assesses some of the more prominent analogies that were drawn for Mary and argues that these analogies were invoked in order to demonstrate the acceptability of female kingship, to prove that Mary was England’s legitimate monarch, and to argue that providence would deliver her of a child. In analyzing these analogies, it becomes apparent that Mary’s gender was not the impediment to rule that polemicists portrayed it as being. Instead, the continued appearance of the biblical analogies used previously by Mary’s father and half-brother, and their later re-use by her half-sister Elizabeth, demonstrates their potency as a tool of political legitimization." @default.
