- W4226525251 abstract "Several research studies showed the superiority of concrete-filled FRP tubes (CFFTs) over conventional reinforced concrete columns for static structural performance (in terms of ductility and load-carrying capacity). However, up to date, very few studies have considered the behaviour of CFFT columns under dynamic impact loading. This review investigates the dynamic response of columns subjected to dynamic impact loading with various material reinforcement. FRP confinement increased the load carrying capacity, ductility, and energy absorption of the member which further improves as the thickness of the FRP is increased. Spiral reinforcement (SR) was shown to improve the impact resistance of columns, through providing additional shear capacity, which also reduced the severity of the damage. The combination of both FRP and spiral reinforcement shows incredible promise for increasing the impact resistance of columns, with the shortcomings of using either material reduced with the addition of the other. Steel tubes and Ultra-High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete were investigated and shown to both be viable options for improving impact resistance of concrete columns. The axial impact resistance of concrete columns was also shown to be improved through the addition of steel tubes or FRP and spiral reinforcement. From this review, CFFT columns were shown to be a more promising configuration to improve the impact resistance than reinforced concrete. This review has been conducted as part of comprehensive experimental studies at Carleton University through full-scale lateral impact tests using a pendulum on a series of CFFT and reinforce concrete columns." @default.
