Sarawak’s call for more autonomy is based on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and the provisions in the federal constitution for the rights and privileges accorded to the state. The federal government’s political dominance and tendency to centralize power were met with opposition from state leaders. After a period of short conflict under Sarawak’s first chief minister, Stephen Kalong Ningkan, the state’s relations with the federal government normalized during the administrations of Abdul Rahman Yaakub and Abdul Taib Mahmud. Sarawak is expected to maintain its pragmatic approach in its relationship with the federal government. As long as the ruling local political elites are in control of state politics and federal influence is weak, Sarawak has the political leverage to pressure the central government to give more power to the state by way of devolution of power and decentralization." @default.
