- W4229049675 abstract "Most true abdominal hernias are congenital in origin and are defined as full-thickness defects confined within normal apertures of the abdominal wall. Umbilical hernias usually appear as an innocuous painless, soft, round mass, or swelling at the umbilical scar. Patients presenting with complicated hernias that have changed appearance or consistency, or when the patient is exhibiting signs suggesting involvement of intra-abdominal organs, orthogonal radiographs, ultrasound, or both are indicated. In incarcerated hernias without evidence of organ damage or compromise, the hernia sac is carefully incised and the tissue examined for signs of impending necrosis. Antibiotics are not necessary after surgery for uncomplicated hernia repairs. In uncomplicated hernias, animals present with a painless, unilateral or bilateral mass(es) with a soft, doughy consistency. Incarcerated hernias present more of a diagnostic challenge because palpation may not yield a diagnosis. Large hernias that are reducible and associated with otherwise no clinical signs can be managed on an elective basis." @default.
