- W4229069898 abstract "The publication of the landmark report “Toxicity Testing in the 21st Century: A Vision and a Strategy” by the US National Academy of Sciences introduced the idea of cytotoxicity as a biomarker for predicting toxicity in vivo. Different commercial cytotoxicity assay kits representing different biomarkers or pathways were available commercially for the purpose of rapid predictive screening of potential toxicants. These kits, which represented different endpoints of toxicity, were effective tools for the rapid predictive screening of potential toxicants on the basis of their cytotoxic activities, regardless of their mechanisms of toxicity and chemical classification. No single assay was all-inclusive and able to determine whether a compound is severely or moderately toxic or is not toxic at all. This observation highlights the importance of using multiple assays to cover a wide range of diverse key toxic processes for screening potential toxicants. It supports the hypothesis that a battery of rapid, simple, and reliable cytotoxicity assays is an excellent tool for predicting in vivo effects of suspected toxicants regardless of their mechanism or mode of action." @default.
