- W4229668936 abstract "We provide an extensive review of the structural organization of the flavivirus particle, its sensitivity to acid pH, and the conformational change it undergoes upon exposure to acid pH. We discuss how the icosahedral particle organization deviates from the Caspar and Klug quasi-equivalence principle, and apply a novel formalism proposed by Rochal et al., Nanoscale 2016 8 16976 to describe its geometric organization. We further show that the group theory analysis of the positional order at the spherical particle’s surface presented by Rochal et al., can account for the thermodynamics of the transition between the two lattices, which occurs reversibly with pH. One key observation is that the assembly of the immature flavivirus particle – which occurs at neutral pH in the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum – leaves an unoccupied position in the icosahedral lattice, thereby generating sufficient space to allow the envelope proteins to undergo the substantial conformational change required for particle maturation at low pH, during exocytosis." @default.
