- W4229693820 abstract "Letter to the Editors Pamela H. Simpson August 20, 2010 Dear Marta and Louis, Congratulations on another fine issue of the journal. Travis Nygard and I are both honored and delighted to have “Indians at the Corn Palaces: Race and Reception at Two Midwestern Festival Buildings” as part of volume 17, number 1, the spring 2010 issue. We enjoyed working with you both and found your suggestions very helpful, but we were disappointed to see an error that apparently happened in layout where the caption for Figure 3 was repeated for Figure 4. For those of your readers wondering what the giant crop art Indian sculpture at the bottom of page 37 is, it is from the 1902 Atchison, Kansas Corn Carnival and is a figure of an Apache Indian designed by C. H. Kassabaum of Atchison and sponsored by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway. We are sorry this information was left out of the article but hope the new “Letters to the Editors” section will give us a chance to set the record straight. While that error happened in production and we never got a chance to see the final galleys, there was another that we should have caught in the proof reading stage and that is on page 41, second column, lines 3–4, where it says the Mitchell Corn Palace was “a building left unadorned during the dry years of 1892 to 1904.” Since there were decorated buildings in 1892, 1893, 1900, 1901, 1902, 1903, and 1904, I think that sentence should have read, “a building left unadorned during the dry years between 1894 and 1899.” So we apologize for any confusion that may have caused. Finally, there was also an error in your introductory essay when you said that Oscar Howe, the artist who did the corn murals from 1948 to 1971, was a “Crow.” He was not. As we explain in footnote 3, he was born into the Yanktonai band of Nakota-speaking Sioux and was raised on the Crow Creek Reservation. But that is the name of the creek, not the tribe. He referred to himself as a Dakota. Thank you for giving us a chance to correct these errors and congratulations again on a splendid issue. Pamela H. Simpson Washington and Lee University Lexington, Virginia Footnotes The editors would like to thank Pam and Travis for pointing out the errors and are pleased that this column allows us to acknowledge and correct them.
