Our modern day and age has been termed as the “Plastic Age” for a very simple reason, plastics have replaced all classical materials in almost all applications. This led to a reliance on them which resulted in the accumulation of large amounts of waste that now has to be dealt with in a sustainable and economical manner. In order to do this, the ultimate treatment for such waste was deemed to be converting it to highly beneficial products. These products can include chemicals, fuel, and energy. The first chapter starts off the book with a fundamental review and technical description of the main terms faced along its subsequent chapters. It will also define what is typically classed as polymers and plastics so that readers will be able to understand the plastic solid waste (PSW) management hierarchy to study the preference order for managing this type of waste. Hence, the main production and supply chain of plastic materials will be described all the way to its “grave,” which in this case is waste disposal. This chapter will also cover the associated factors with PSW management for product recovery, covering socio-economic factors and logistics, which are associated with such work. PSW sustainability within the production cycle will also be examined. It is very important to understand the origin of plastic materials and how we can deal with them in a sustainable manner. This is in order to be able to develop an integrated cycle for PSW management that can sustain itself from feedstock preparation stages to product recovery in an environmentally friendly manner that can compete with conventional technologies available on the market." @default.
