- W4229754804 abstract "Culture, society, economy and environment all work together to influence the range and type of trauma a person may sustain over a life-time, and also to their body during and after death. These variables are further influenced by a person’s age, gender, status, occupation, and general health. In paleopathology, we have developed a series of methods to identify trauma in human remains, which range from digital imaging to macroscopic observation. Typically, the majority of trauma observed in the palaeopathological record are fractures, particularly to the limb bones, and injuries caused by weapons. Body modifications, such as dental ablation are also considered to be traumatic in origin, and in historic populations, evidence for corset-wear is also being identified. Recent work has also established techniques to identify victims of abuse, and with the integration of structural violence theory in bioarchaeology, the scope for what musculoskeletal and dental indicate violence has also changed. Developments in how care may be identified and interpreted in the past has also significantly advanced, enabling us to achieve more nuanced and sensitive interpretations of past lives." @default.
