- W4230047694 abstract "Abstract The term “internalism” is a label for a number of distinct philosophical positions. We shall be concerned with metaethics ( see Metaethics), where it is a term used to label positions that posit a conceptual or necessary connection between moral judgments, moral truths, or reasons on the one hand, and motivation or reasons on the other. Restricting ourselves to specifically motivational internalism, our concern would be with whether there is a necessary or conceptual connection between either moral judgments, moral truths, or reasons and motivation. For example, a motivational internalist concerned with morality might think that a sincere moral judgment must necessarily be such as to motivate a person who accepts that judgment to act as the judgment suggests. Or a motivational internalist about reasons may think that reasons necessarily depend on elements in an agent's existing motivational system such as desires (Williams 1981; see Williams, Bernard). These examples should give a rough sense of the sorts of claims internalists make. We'll consider other sorts besides these." @default.
