- W4230149147 abstract "Calpains are a family of intracellular, Ca 2+ -dependent cysteine proteases (Clan CA, family C02, EC 3.4.22.17) found in almost all eukaryotes and some bacteria. The human genome contains 15 calpain genes. Calpains function as non-degradative enzymes that perform limited proteolysis of their substrates to transform their structures and activities. The physiological roles of calpains, therefore, are as diversified as the functions of their substrate proteins. Such complexity is reflected in the fact that calpains are referred to as “modulator proteases.” This article is intended to provide an overview of calpain research topics that have recently entered the spotlight." @default.
