- W4230777172 abstract "Remittances are capital that is sent by the individual worker who has earned it from the place where it was earned to their place of origin. The practice of sending remittances is centuries old, but the scale and speed of remitting has increased dramatically in recent decades. Remittances now constitute a large, growing, and stable flow of capital into the poorer countries of the world, which is why they are of interest to development geographers and economic geographers. At a global scale, recorded remittances are now significantly larger than overseas aid flows and in 2017 were estimated to be around 613 billion US$ in total, of which 466 billion US$ were sent into the developing world. The geography of this global story, which is generally analyzed at the scale of nation-states, requires some careful unpicking as remittances are not distributed evenly across the world, but vary by region, country, and gender. Remittances are widely assumed to be good for the national economy to which they are sent as well as for the individuals and households who receive them. There is a complex and variable set of reasons why an individual sends money home and explaining the relative importance of these “determinants of remittances” is an ongoing research task. Remittances are also of interest to critical political geographers because they have been associated with security issues. However, there is little hard evidence to support the claim that terrorism is financed by remittances and attempts to regulate remittance flows in the name of global security have often had negative welfare impacts on poor households in the global south. The global remittance transfer business is dominated by a small number of commercial firms (particularly in Africa). Many of the development policy interventions in this field have either sought to reduce the price of sending money home by challenging the monopolistic behavior of these firms or to maximize the development benefits of migration for countries in the Global South." @default.
