Management’s determination to retain its hegemony in the region resulted in a “major social upheaval” (p. 192), which led ultimately to the permanent decline of Lake Superior nativecopper production. Unlike the native copper mines that produced approximately eleven billion pounds of copper from the 1840s through the late 1960s, the last productive copper mine on the Keweenaw, the White Pine mine, extracted some 4.5 billion pounds of chalcocite copper in a mere four decades (from the 1950s to 1995). Lankton thoughtfully concludes by examining the social and environmental legacy the copper-mining industry left behind and how residents of the region continue their attempts to preserve the heritage of copper mining throughout the Keweenaw. The inclusion of approximately eighty photographs and twenty maps and drawings clearly strengthens the book. The decision to intersperse these visual aids throughout the work, rather than grouping them together in a separate section devoted to illustrations, does not detract from the narrative; indeed, it enhances it. Hollowed Ground is a well-written and engaging narrative by the foremost authority on Lake Superior copper mining and is highly recommended for students and scholars alike. Sources and resources. Cloth, $45.00; paper, $22.95. Under the Holy Rosary Church in Isadore, Michigan, lay the body of Sister Janina, buried alive by the church housekeeper beneath two feet of dirt and a pile of lumber. The proximity of the body did not seem to bother the murderer, but several church leaders grew uneasy— especially when Father Edward decided to rebuild the church. In Isadore’s Secret: Sin, Murder, and Confession in a Northern Michigan Town, former crime reporter and award-winning writer Mardi Link reveals a fascinating narrative of love, death, scandal, ambition, and hate in a small, Polish-Catholic town in the early twentieth century. Link’s goal is to uncover what happened at the Holy Rosary Church and school and the repercussions for those involved, and she has produced a riveting tale. One only wishes she had taken her analysis further, as she 174 Michigan Historical Review has uncovered a wealth of material highlighting gender, ethnic, religious, regional, and cultural tensions representative of American society at the time. But, in fairness, that is not the book Link set out to write. In the summer of 1907 Father Andrew returned from an afternoon of fishing to find that one of the three Felician nuns who lived and worked at the parish school was missing. The missing woman was Sister Superior Janina. Described as “fun loving and gregarious” (p. 12), she played the piano and was an accomplished singer. She was liked by everyone, except Stanislawa “Stella” Lipczynska. Stella had escaped persecution in Poland and was widowed at a very young age, left with a daughter to raise on her own. She eventually secured a position at Holy Rosary as the parish housekeeper/manager. Stella disliked all three nuns but reserved special animosity for Sister Janina. Searchers found no sign of the missing woman, but Father Andrew refused to admit defeat, even as rumors about his relationship with Sister Janina turned ugly. He used his own savings to hire a private detective and offer a reward. He remained at Holy Rosary until 1913, when church authorities transferred him to another parish, where Stella followed him three years later and was rehired as his housekeeper. Father Leopold “Leo” Oprychalski replaced Father Andrew and proved to be very popular, but in 1917 he left abruptly. Father Leo’s replacement was the ambitious and handsome Father Edward Podlaszewski. Just before Father Leo left, he told an incredulous Father Edward that he had heard that a nun who had vanished years earlier was buried under the church. The story was later told to a nun new to the parish, but the priest was preoccupied with plans to build a new church, and with his young and pretty new housekeeper. In May 1918, when Father Lempke, the priest for the Felician motherhouse, learned..." @default.
