Since 1663, Britain's leading scientific society, the Royal Society, has had as its motto ‘Nullius in Verba’ , which roughly translates as ‘take nobody's word for it’, and Horace's statement implies the imperative of demonstration over language. Around the same time, the historian of the Royal Society, Bishop Sprat, warned its members to stick to ‘mathematical plainness’, and avoid ‘swellings of style’ whenever possible (1667: 113). Where science strives for the strictly denotative, for the accurate depiction of reality or a one‐to‐one correspondence between word and thing, figurative language, by contrast, threatens any univocality because it pushes language into connotation and multiplicity.
