In terms of its simultaneous de- and reconstructive tendencies that wish to recreate artificial wholes out of fragments, there appears to be little space for self-distance and self-awareness, the prerequisites of ethics—despite the often obsessive concern with its own material (language, in the case of Modernist writing). This self-distancing, however, is impressively present in an often ignored Modernist text, Edith Sitwell’s English Eccentrics, where a self-referential meditation forms the intriguing opening chapter. This chapter will be assessed through the lens of Jacques Rancière’s ideas on literature as a simultaneous creation of community and sectioning off this unity into particularities.
