- W4231495196 abstract "In the world of rising health care costs and external pressures to contain them, avoiding unnecessary diagnostics is appropriate medical practice. However, forgoing the routine histopathologic analysis of adult circumcision tissue would leave the practicing urologist at risk of failure to diagnose penile cancer, as well as other pathologies. Does Routine Pathology Analysis of Adult Circumcision Tissue Identify Penile Cancer?UrologyVol. 85Issue 6PreviewTo assess the utility of foreskin pathology analysis, we evaluated the outcomes and the costs of this practice in patients for whom penile cancer was not suspected. Adult circumcision specimens are routinely sent for pathologic analysis even when penile cancer is not suspected, increasing costs with little benefit. We identified 1 case report of a penile cancer in a higher risk patient, which was treated effectively with circumcision. In the prior evaluation from West et al,1 in their cohort with normal clinical examination, there were indeed noted to be 62% with a microscopic abnormality; however, no patients with a normal examination had cancer, and instead, the abnormality was predominantly inflammation or dermatitis (which is of limited clinical value).
