- W4231555894 abstract "The term “genocide” was formulated by Raphael Lemkin in the aftermath of the Nazi atrocities of World War II and became entrenched in emerging international law in 1948 by the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide. Questions over what constitutes genocide, however, were raised immediately and remain an important source of debate. We review these debates and then turn to anthropology's relation with both the phenomenon and study of genocide. As anthropologists became more attentive to large‐scale global processes and began focusing on the state, studies of larger‐scale violent conflict and eventually genocide became more common. A reckoning with genocide also formed part of anthropology's self‐critique in coming to terms with its past relationship to colonial projects. Anthropological involvements with genocide now include diverse engagements such as providing evidence in legal proceedings, explaining why genocide occurs, and examining everyday life in its aftermath." @default.
