- W4231594311 abstract "Crystal mesophases are thermodynamically stable states of matter that have properties that are intermediate to those of crystals and liquids. This chapter discusses three types of crystal mesophases: liquid crystals (LC), plastic crystals, and conformationally disordered crystals. It primarily focuses on LC and their behavior relative to crystalline and amorphous solids. LCs are, by far, the most frequently observed and most technologically useful crystal mesophase systems. LC can be broadly divided into two major groups: thermotropic liquid crystals and lyotropic liquid crystals. These are differentiated by the underlying mechanisms that thermodynamically lead to certain types of molecular self-association. Thermotropic systems are those that are induced to form through changes in thermal energy, just as would occur upon heating and cooling crystals and liquids. Plastic crystals generally consist of small molecules that have a compact sphere-like molecular structure. The chapter also discusses nanocrystals, which exhibit unique structural and thermodynamic features relative to ordinary crystals." @default.
