- W4231626829 abstract "There are a number of reasons why individuals engage in socially undesirable behavior. These behaviors produce personally desirable outcomes, but most individuals restrain themselves from action in favor of longer‐term goals. Inhibiting behavior serves as a key psychological process that governs numerous transgressive acts such as risk taking, aggression, and other impulsive behaviors. A prominent social learning theory model of disinhibition details three phases during which self‐sanctioning processes fail to limit or prevent transgressive behavior. These include justifying the nature of the conduct, rationalizing the effects of the conduct, and focusing on characteristics of the victim. The model emphasizes the role that observing others plays in disinhibition and thereby speaks well to media influences. The effects of media on consumers' likelihood of disinhibiting behavior operate on each of these three stages. Passive media such as television shows and movies, as well as interactive media, such as video games, social media, and web browsing, operate in both broad and specific ways to affect processes that occur within each stage." @default.
