- W4231722798 abstract "The structure and function of any organ system in an older person are the end products of the aging process, disease-related alterations, and life-style variables. In the heart and vasculature, the cumulative effects of these latter two variables often obscure the effects of aging per se. It is nevertheless important to delineate true aging changes in cardiovascular structure and function because they serve as the backdrop upon which the specific cardiovascular diseases to be discussed in subsequent chapters are super-imposed. Such age-associated changes, although usually causing no overt manifestations themselves, may significantly alter the symptoms, signs, and clinical course of cardiovascular pathology in elderly patients. This chapter will attempt to delineate those changes in the heart and peripheral vasculature, at rest and during exercise, that are thought to represent “normal” aging.KeywordsCardiac OutputPulse Wave VelocityRadionuclide AngiographyAging HeartVentricular Ectopic BeatThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
