• W4231728726 abstract "This is the last issue of Respirology to be published under my auspices as Editor-In-Chief. It has been a privilege for me to serve as Editor-in-Chief of Respirology for the last 8 years. It has been an enjoyable and rewarding experience, which was greatly enhanced by the contribution of a great team of Associate Editors, Editorial Board members, APSR Executive and a loyal and hard working Editorial Office staff. In the first few months of being the Editor-in-Chief we had a half-time office staff member and the Journal produced four issues of 100 pages and the two greatest challenges were: could we fill each issue with content (we had a 90% acceptance rate) and could we understand the English of many of our submissions and do justice to what the authors were trying to say. We decided to embark on a philosophy of trying to support the non-European and non-North American parts of the world, to accept on the science and not the English, to enhance the English so as to do justice to the science, invite reviews and editorials from world class authors and to produce a journal that operated only on international benchmarks. We also tried to introduce internal enhancements involving Board structure, Associate Editors, office processing, Manuscript Central, Impact Factor registration, internal auditing and review of outcomes and public relations and more dynamic interactions with our Publisher. The Journal now is recognized as a leading respiratory journal internationally, it has had growth figures of 30% or more per year based on all benchmarks, its acceptance rate is around 30%, it accepts manuscripts from over 43 different countries, it has had four impact factors with an improvement of 20–30% each year and this year will produce eight issues. The office has a staff of highly talented and dedicated people and a permanent location provided by the Lung Institute of Western Australia, Perth, Australia. None of the achievements of the Journal would have occurred without the support and hard work of all of those involved with the Journal: the Board, Editors, Reviewers, Contributors, Staff and Publisher. I am proud of what we have collectively achieved. The future for Respirology is very bright with Professor YC Gary Lee as the new Editor-in-Chief. Respirology will continue to grow at all levels as it continues to strive for excellence and set higher standards both in the content and how the Journal is run. I look forward to following the Journal's progress in the years to come and providing support in any way I can.
