- W4231817378 abstract "The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has released its fourth annual National Health Security Preparedness Index report for the USA, and while there is slow improvement, the results still contain warnings for the state of health security in the USA. The index uses over 200 individual measures across six domains. They range from incident and information management to environmental and occupational health, in order to take a snapshot of the state of preparedness for a health crisis; from an outbreak of expanding infectious diseases, such as Zika or a severe influenza outbreak, to climate-change-fuelled floods and droughts that might displace large numbers of people. The report finds the USA improving on most measures, but improvement is not evenly distributed. The largest gains were in community planning and engagement, with the vast network of municipalities, hospital systems, and law enforcement continuing to improve on cooperation. The Deep South and the Mountain West continue to lag behind the national average. If trends continue, the five highest ranking states could achieve what the index considers a strong level of health security by 2021—but at the rate of the slowest states, that level of security is unlikely before 2036. Unsurprisingly, the report found that increased health-care coverage increased health security, while high levels of poverty decreased it. Measures looking at the health system and health-care delivery were not significantly improved, as uncertainty in federal health-care policy continues. The report calls on federal and state lawmakers to support policies that expand affordable health-care coverage. Health security encompasses many facets, from environmental protection and disaster management to health-care coverage, preventive medicine, and the ability of workers to take time off. Large disparities exist between states in the USA, with some states making important investments in prevention and preparation, while some pay it short shrift—but potential disasters do not respect state boundaries. Health security is a necessary investment for all states, and one that policy makers should continue to focus on." @default.
