- W4232036710 abstract "Vibrational spectra, measured by EELS, of cyclohexane adsorbed on Pd(110) and Ni(110) are reported and reviewed alongside spectra in the literature of this adsorbate on a number of hexagonally close-packed surfaces viz. Pt(111), Pd(111), Ni(111), Cu(111) and Ru(001). In all cases the non-dissociatively adsorbed cyclohexane exhibits the considerably broadened and downward shifted C-H stretching peak which has been the cause of so much interest since the first such EEL spectra were reported [1]. We find that the extent of perturbation of the C-H bonds, as indicated by the shifting, broadening and intensification of the CH stretching loss peak, varies substantially from metal to metal of the same surface structure but is less dependent on surface geometry for the same metal. We also find a strong correlation between the extent of perturbation of the C-H bonds and the strength of the metal-cyclohexane bonding, suggesting that the perturbed CH groups provide a major dehydrogenation pathway on the surface. The theoretical models which have been put forward to describe the so-called “softening” of the CH stretching modes of adsorbed cyclohexane are discussed in the light of our results." @default.
