- W4232050470 abstract "This entry presents the central premises and selected applications of the cognitive-affective processing system (CAPS) model of personality, proposed by Walter Mischel and Yuichi Shoda. This model conceptualizes personality as a stable, cognitive-affective system that processes situational information and uses this information to generate behaviors. The model consists of five types of cognitive-affective units (CAUs): encodings, expectancies and beliefs, goals and values, competencies and self-regulatory plans, and affects. Patterns of stimulus processing that activate CAUs leading to behavior are called if…then contingencies. The principles of the CAPS model explain how there can be stability in a person's cognitive-affective system and yet variability the person's behavior in different situations. The model can be applied to our understanding of various important psychological phenomena, including rejection sensitivity, delay of gratification, and psychological disorders." @default.
