- W4232079160 abstract "For thermal characterization several methods are available. They have in common that a certain response is measured as function of temperature. For example, in differential scanning calorimetry, the response is the heat absorbed or released, while for thermogravimetric analysis the weight is recorded. This chapter discusses these methods and reviews the various relaxation mechanisms active in polymers. It deals with local and cooperative mechanisms in amorphous polymers, illustrates chain motion, and suggests some remarks on partially crystalline materials. There are several ways to characterize the mechanical behavior of materials relevant for coatings. The most important ones are dynamic mechanical (thermal) analysis and rheological measurements. Hardness is determined by pressing a hard indenter into a flat surface of the material and measuring the size of the resulting indentation. Internal stress may arise as a result of degradation due to (UV) radiation, as this process leads often to the expulsion of small molecules and/or enhanced crosslinking." @default.
