- W4232731710 abstract "The rise and fall of the Imperial Institute in South Kensington perfectly encompassed the last phase of Britain's direct imperial commitment between the 1880s and the 1960s. The Institute emerged from ideas mooted for a Colonial Museum in the 1870s and from the Colonial and Indian Exhibition of 1886. The organising committee described its purpose as being to illustrate the great commercial and industrial resources of the colonies and India, and to spread knowledge of their progress and social condition. By the turn of the nineteenth century the Institute was in a state of financial collapse. The Ormsby-Gore Committee, which reported on the Institute in 1923, was specifically charged with considering closure. The Ormsby-Gore Committee's recommendations were frustrated by private donors and by the development of propagandist institutes and techniques. In 1926 the newly created Empire Marketing Board provided funds for a cinema at the Institute which opened in 1927." @default.
