- W4233098081 abstract "I appreciate Feridun's comments. Many of today's practicing gynecologists were taught that total abdominal hysterectomy was the only appropriate operation. The risk of subsequent cervical stump cancer in the past justified the removal of the cervix when the uterus was removed. It is difficult to give up a practice that has served our patients well for many years. However, time and circumstances change. The arguments favoring total hysterectomy are difficult to defend when effective screening for cervical stump cancer and occasional minor interventions can accomplish the same desired result, the prevention of morbidity and death from invasive cervical cancer. Supracervical hysterectomy performed through a minilaparotomy is an appealing alternative for some patients who require a definitive surgical resolution of dysfunctional bleeding, fertility, and other benign disorders of the uterine fundus. Potential long-term benefits associated with conservation of the cervix need to be evaluated further." @default.
