- W4233602011 abstract "Numerous efforts have been made toward characterizing the lysogenic relationship between virus and host cell. This chapter discusses the available results. The work on lysogeny has developed using phages unrelated to those of the T-series. The chapter covers the work done with four temperate phages (λ, P1, P2, and P22) that were isolated from enteric bacteria and which have been studied intensively. These four phages represent some of the interesting biological features that one may find in temperate phages. The chapter discusses the general properties of lysogenic bacteria and the notion of prophage. A certain proportion of the sensitive cells infected with a temperate phage give origin to lysogenic progeny. The ratio of the number of such cells to the total number of infected cells is called frequency of lysogenization. The several ways in which one can measure the frequency of lysogenization are discussed. The chapter also considers the stability of the Lysogenic Condition. It describes the phage production by lysogenic cells. In inducible lysogenic systems it is possible to cause cell lysis and phage production in the majority of the population with a variety of treatments: exposure to ultraviolet light or ionizing radiation or certain chemicals. The lysogenic condition of a cell may alter its properties in other respects besides imparting to it the potentiality to produce phage and the property of immunity." @default.
