- W4233652853 abstract "My co-authors and I are indebted to Drs. Marangoz and Leblebicioğlu for their astute detection of the error reported. We apologize for any confusion that this may have caused the reader and agree completely with the correction suggested. When writing this report we were faced with the constant dilemma of nomenclature as it relates to defining distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) instability. In a technical sense the radius is the unstable element against the relatively fixed ulna. Clinical convention, however, cites the position of the ulna relative to the radius in classifying instability. During multiple shifts of position during our manuscript revision process we obviously missed this error. To emphasize further the clarification, the results of our study showed that dorsal capsular imbrication stabilizes the DRUJ when the forearm is pronated and volar capsular imbrication stabilizes the DRUJ when the forearm is supinated. We agree with Drs. Marangoz and Leblebicioğlu regarding the theoretical role that negative joint pressure plays in stability. This certainly deserves further study. We thank Drs. Marangoz and Leblebicio#x011F;lu and the Editorial Board of the Journal of Hand Surgery for the opportunity to correct the cited error. Stability of the Distal Radioulnar Joint Contributed by the Joint CapsuleJournal of Hand SurgeryVol. 30Issue 4PreviewIn our last meeting of the hand surgery journal club we read with great interest the article, “Stability of the distal radioulnar joint contributed by the joint capsule” by Watanabe et al (J Hand Surg 2004;29A:1114–1120). We believe that it was a well-designed study that investigated the delicate relationship between the structures responsible for the stability of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ), and drew attention to the importance of joint capsule repair based on experimental data. Watanabe et al accurately showed that dorsal capsule imbrication contributed toward stabilizing the DRUJ in pronated positions preventing volar translation of the radius relative to the ulna, whereas volar capsule imbrication stabilized the DRUJ in supinated forearm positions preventing dorsal translation.
