The assembly of gold nanoparticles on the pore walls of surface-modified nanoporous alumina membrane templates under flow conditions is accompanied by spontaneous room-temperature coalescence of the bound nanoparticles, which results, after membrane dissolution, in self-sustained NPNTs that preserve the nanoparticle morphology (see picture).
