- W4234182765 abstract "Physical activity level is frequently quantified through the use of self-report questionnaire instruments. While useful, these are subject to numerous biases including regional and secular infiuences. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to examine the criterion and construct validity of the Yale Physical Activity Questionnaire in a random sample of older adults residing within a 40-mile radius of Baton Rouge, LA. METHODS 112 older adults (60–99 years of age) were examined for resting metabolic rate (RMR), physical activity using the Yale Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Adults, and physical function using the reduced Continuous-Scale Physical Function Performance test (CS-PFP10). In addition, a subset of 35 participants was examined for Total energy expenditure (TEE) using doubly-labeled water (DLW). TEE derived from DLW was compared to TEE computed as RMR + Yale Activity Energy Expenditure. The association between Physical Function and values of TEE obtained from both approaches were examined using Spearman correlation. RESULTS Intraclass correlation revealed a moderately strong association between Yale TEE and DLW TEE methods (r = 0.69). Correlation revealed the Yale TEE scores were significantly associated with subscales and total score CS-PFP10 (r = .36−.59, p <.001). DLW TEE values were also significantly associated with the CS-PFP subscales and total score (r = .50−.89, p <.001). CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that the Yale Physical Activity questionnaire has fair to good criterion and construct validity for assessing physical activity level in the general population of older adults. Future studies must examine the usefulness of this instrument in sub-populations including specific ethnicities and socio-cultural groups as well as the potential for questionnaires to compliment other objective tools such as pedometers and accelerometers. Finally, as augmenting physical activity levels is increasingly becoming an important objective of community-based health-promotion programs for older adults, the sensitivity of the Yale questionnaire and other physical activity measurement instruments must be examined.
