- W4234218447 abstract "by Ulrich Beck and Elisabeth Beck-GernsheimSage Publications, London, 2001, 220 pages, £19·99, ISBN 0 761 96112 7. This complex book assesses the role of individuals in contemporary society. Whilst it is a sociological critique of German society, its thesis is applicable across all developed countries. It concerns how human identity has changed from being prescribed and certain (‘born into’ and structured) to how individuals now have an overlapping array of non-linear tasks to complete that they are solely responsible for (‘leading a life of one's own'). The book has 14 chapters, each taking key aspects of modern living to assess. Subjects covered include globalization, the family, social class, women's issues, division of labour, caring and death. One of the most interesting chapters concerns the role of genetic technology and health. This raises important issues regarding what happens when a highly individualized society embraces new possibilities opened up by technological advance. In this world, the body becomes the individual's project and starting point, being the raw material for choice and improvement. Genetic freedom means Bigger! Better! Stronger! as people manage risk factors according to genetic diagnoses. Several matters remain unresolved: notions that individuals are now resistant to social class issues; that freedoms enjoyed may not reduce inequalities; the assumption that each life is full of risks to be faced alone. Improvements could also be made via summaries to assist the reader through convoluted ideas and language. Overall, this is a challenging, dense book providing a provocative account of the world we now inhabit." @default.
