- W4234367196 abstract "More than half of the contemporary human population lives in cities and this longstanding trend is predicted to continue, especially in less economically developed countries. The lineage of Homo sapiens evolved under very different, nonurban conditions, creating the possibility of a mismatch between our evolutionary biology and our contemporary environment. Cities may pose significant biological challenges to which people either adapt or suffer. Cities have changed since their origin and their influence on human biology has too. However, they are characterized by: (1) social stratification that is often extreme; (2) exposure to pollutants and contaminants in air, food, and water; (3) increased exposure to infectious agents; (4) altered energy balance; and (5) psychosocial stress. The proportion and severity of these influences on urban populations vary over space and time, thereby contributing to human variation in morbidity, mortality, fertility, and prenatal and postnatal growth over space and time." @default.
