- W4234430392 abstract "Tranquilizers, muscle relaxants, and other depressant drugs, despite their non-barbiturate nature can cause both intoxication and addiction, requiring that they be prescribed only with caution appropriate to their dangers, according to Carl F. Essig, MD, of the Addiction Research Center at the US Public Health Service Hospital at Lexington, Ky. He has found little difference between the potential dangers of barbiturates and six mood-influencing drugs: meprobamate (Miltown, Equanil), glutethimide (Doriden), ethinamate (Valmid), ethchlorvynol (Placidyl), methyprylon (Noludar) and chlordiazepoxide (Librium). Speaking during a symposium on Drug Abuse and Drug Dependence at the meeting last month of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Cleveland, Essig said all these drugs can cause states of intoxication and physical dependence, either of which might be harmful to the user or society. They are considered to be drugs of addiction. The speaker cited 10 separate studies upon which his warning was based. In" @default.
