- W4234434504 abstract "Mr H. Doust said that his own work on the fossils of the area corroborated some parts of what Dr Selley had said, but not others. He had nothing to add at present to the interpretation of the fluviatile and estuarine environments, both of which were well established. With respect to the intertidal environment he stressed the marked similarity between recent intertidal bioturbation and that present in these rocks. In particular he mentioned that in the large-scale fossil deposits of the creeks, which Dr Selley had compared with those occurring on the North Sea coasts at the present day, the burrowing was identical to that seen by the speaker in creek walls in the Wash.He disagreed with the interpretation of the more marine environments: examination of the limestones led him to doubt the possibility of their having formed off-shore barriers for the following reasons:(1) Most of the fossils indicated deposition in water depths of the order of 30 to 40 m in environments of rather low energy. Large-scale, landward transport of this material in the form of migrating megaripples could be discounted in view of the essentially unfragmented nature of the preservation, and the marked variation in fossil content between units on average only 5 ft thick.(2) Cross-bedded unit with inclined foresets were rather rare, being present in only 13 per cent of the units examined by the speaker. None of the other units needed to be interpreted in terms of cross-bedding.(3) Many of the limestones" @default.
